There is one pointed stripe extending from its nose, two elaborate stripes on its neck and chest, one zigzag stripe each on its jaws, back, and hindquarters, one triangular stripe on each of its thighs, and two stripes banding each of its legs. Its coat is black with white, jagged stripes all over its body. At age ten, you get to leave your house and school behind to travel the world and collect monsters that fight for you? What kid wouldn't want that? It's escapism, sure, but it's damn fun escapism, combined with a rock-solid gameplay system that still holds up 15 years later.Zebstrika is a zebra-like Pokémon. The monsters you catch run the gamut from cute to weird to totally badass- the variety of Pokemon you can catch means that there is something to match everyone's personal tastes.Ībove all, though, the very conceit of it all is incredibly appealing. The human character designs are influenced by the ever-popular Akira Toriyama (he of DragonBall fame), but the creatures themselves are of course the main hook. Say what you will about the stereotypical "anime" style, but Pokemon has a look distinct from any other franchise in Japan, and it certainly stood out in America back in 1998. To add on top of this, there's also a certain aesthetic that the Pokemon series uses to attract the young and the young at heart. Battling is of course also a major gameplay feature, and recent entries allow you to take on players from around the world. Trading Pokemon with other players is encouraged, as there are certain species that only evolve during a trade, and each version of a particular generation has differing species available. Ever seen the video where a Magikarp defeats a team of high-level Legendary Pokemon? It's entirely possible, but only once you really dig deep into the system.īeyond the "easy to learn/hard to master", there's a major social element to the game. Once you've taken on the Elite Four, you can always challenge your friends and learn the more complicated moves and combinations. Unlike more complicated RPGs, you're initially only given one 'character' to fight with, adding to a more gradual learning curve. This encourages you to learn the elemental weaknesses and strengths, most of which are fairly common sense (fire beats grass, water beats fire, etc.), as well as resource management (i.e. Brute force is possible, but only to a certain extent, as you aren't able to control a Pokemon of a certain level or higher without the proper badge. The game's main storyline introduces you to different types of Pokemon (Bug Gym, Fire Gym, Rock Gym, etc.) and forces you to come up with strategies to defeat them. It's important to note the RPG mechanics derived straight from Dragon Warrior and its ilk, but what's more pertinent is that they're initially presented in an easily digestible format.
